TOM JOHNSON - NINE BELLS (1982)

As the cover diagram on Nine Bells suggests, this work may be seen as a kind of sonic companion piece to Samuel Beckett's legendary TV piece, Quad I & II (1981). The recording aurally documents a performance/installation work wherein the performer navigates a precise walking pattern around a series of nine suspended bells. The resulting chimes and footsteps create a simultaneous sense of rhythm, motion and temporal progression as well as their opposite--floating timelessness and stasis. Notably, Johnson was a student of Morton Feldman.
