J0SÉ MAURO - OBN0X1US (1970)

A much-discussed lost masterpiece, fueled in part by the little known musician himself, and his disappearance soon after its release. Side-stepping many of the Bossa-Samba-MPB tropes of his day, Mauro produced this subversive work of baroque psych-pop in Brazil during the time when most of his better known colleagues were fleeing the country. Google Translate, sadly, only helps us non-speakers in vague ways. But the album is gorgeous, whip-smart and virtually singular in its tone and quick-change arrangements. At times this recalls a late 60s Scott Walker and at others like a folk response to serialist minimalism. Among other things.

R1CCARD0 SIN1GAGLIA - R1FLESSI (1986)

A follow-up to our Futuro Antico post some weeks back, we offer one of the band-leader's solo outings. The pastoral sound still gives sway through gentle folk motifs, water sounds and the occasional carnival riff. But the tone gets starker here, a minimalist effort that goes into something approaching free-jazz sound field. Orchestra, synths and field recordings. Meditative....And tense.

Dream it here...

DEREK B41LEY - IMPROVISATION (1975)

OWOD's fifth DIVerso posting finds Mr. Bailey at, perhaps, his pluckiest, scrambliest best. For some of us, only the most disjointed of pacing, atonal of sounds and structureless of ramblings can provide respite from the tedium of everyday noise, or the incessant churning of the brain. This album--a masterclass on dexterous fingerwork--is dreamsound for those of us.

BAUD0U1N DE J4ER - GAYAGEUM S4NJO (2012)

Korean Court Music played on Gayageum. For when your addiction to solo string instruments needs more spaciousness, gentleness, and room to breath.

PSYCH1C TV - DRE4MS LESS SWEET (1983)

Let us start the New Year with an image of an orchid with a pierced anther cap, shall we? And a series of four posts subtitled Sounds for a Dream Lover. The dream lover is sweet and dirty woman--a true vision--living in a mill town on the craggy windswept coast of the north Pacific. One must take a sea voyage to visit. She collects everyday objects from times past. She eats seeds and sneaks cigarettes. Her eyes glow blue. She fornicates with mixture of urgency and bashfulness. She is nearly a stranger, so all descriptions could be projections of oneself.

Dreams, sweet and vulgar...
CL4RA R0CKM0RE - THEREM1N (1977)

The dream lover is reading a historical novel about the love affair between Lev Termen and the Lithuanian violin prodigy Clara Rockmore. The history of electronic music; the history of the plaintive, bending sounds of the theremin.

STEVE  BUSCEM1 + ELL10TT SHARP - RUB OUT THE W0RD (2016)

The dream lover has a crush on Buscemi, and she owns a Burroughs edition that is mystifyingly rare. (Later, one goes looking for old Brautigan books in the local second hand shops with the dream lover. Two are found, and left as some kind of aides-memoires. One must return in 30 years to reclaim the purchases.)

FR4NK1E GOES TO H0LLYWOOD - WELC0ME TO THE PLE4SURED0ME (1984)

A view from a boat window. The smoke from the pulp mill receding into the distance. One could very likely and very easily fall in love with the dream lover, her crazy mane of curly blonde hair, tied up while cooking eggs. Best to keep those thoughts to oneself. The eyes get heavy. An 80s erotic synthpop melody pops into one's head. One steadies the heart, and feels instead the stirring of lust. The dreams turn filthy. The rhythms pulse, throb and lilt.

The dream resembles some of this....
