J0SÉ MAURO - OBN0X1US (1970)

A much-discussed lost masterpiece, fueled in part by the little known musician himself, and his disappearance soon after its release. Side-stepping many of the Bossa-Samba-MPB tropes of his day, Mauro produced this subversive work of baroque psych-pop in Brazil during the time when most of his better known colleagues were fleeing the country. Google Translate, sadly, only helps us non-speakers in vague ways. But the album is gorgeous, whip-smart and virtually singular in its tone and quick-change arrangements. At times this recalls a late 60s Scott Walker and at others like a folk response to serialist minimalism. Among other things.

  3. The blog is so great. I have some of the stuff already, the Terry Riley and some of the experimental stuff, and the Gavin Bryars. And so I instantly know I will like a lot of the other stuff that I don't know. Sometimes, when you find a blog that is really well curated like this one, you have a spring in your step for a month! I really hope you keep it up!
