FRED FR1TH - R1VERS & TIDES (2003)

Frith's soundtrack to a documentary on artist Andy Goldsworthy, directed by Mr. T. Riedelsheimer. Subtitled "Working with Time." Guided by piano, violin, and soprano sax. Like our waterways, this is serene, calming and meditative, but also churning, surging and, at times, roaring. (More Frith soundtrack work here).

It is sometimes said that water in dreams is an image of the unconscious reflecting itself.

D4NNY ELFMAN - THE N1GHTMARE BEF0RE CHR1STMAS (1993)

Here, at OWOD, our nightmares are filled with failure. We find ourselves at concerts where we learn we are to perform live without having rehearsed. We find ourselves in classrooms, unprepared for exams, and at the podiums of lecture halls without any notes. In this spirit, we present this soundtrack to the Tim Burton film, meant to be posted for Halloween (along with the whole nightmare sequence) and haunting our thoughts and dreams since.

JERRY G0LDSM1TH - FREUD (1977)

After a hiatus, we return today with a short series on Herr Freud, the progenitor of modern psychology and dream analysis. What follows is quick primer on the man and his ideas, with a few case studies and sonic points of reflection.

Goldsmith's 1962 score for John Huston's biopic (released on album in 1977) sets the scene: lulling harmonics and sweeping dissonances, harrowing stings and stark pizzicato. Eerie, suitably drenched in the sonics and symphonics of the psyche.

Get comfortable on the couch... our session begins here.

MILES DAV1S / MARCUS M1LLER - MUSIC FR0M S1ESTA (1987)

A solar-tinged, glaring soundtrack for drifting off in the late afternoon.

Dry heat...
CERR0NE - VAUD0U AUX CAR4ÏBES (1980)

A bit more erotico-disco--and another soundtrack--to keep you in the mood, for summer and all of its pleasures, real and imagined.

NE1L Y0UNG - DEAD MAN OST (1996)

Pulsing hallucinogenic solo guitar: fuzz, reverb and feedback for those in-between states.

STELV1O CIPRI4NI - INCUB0 SULLA C1TTÀ C0NTAM1NATA (1980)

A quick divertimento into Nightmares of the Contaminated City. A soundtrack that foregrounds both the spookiness of epidemic, and the horrible conditions of the cure. Some of this sounds most sickeningly like hospital waiting room music.

MARC W1LKINS0N - BL00D ON SATAN'S CL4W (1971)

Evocative soundtrack to P. Haggard's film, finally released in 2007. The folk horror aspects of the film are keenly reflected in this work of haunting beauty and pastoral menace, highlighted by use of the Ondes Martenot and the Cimbalom, a Hungarian-style dulcimer.

FRED FR1TH - THE T0P OF H1S HEAD (1989)

We end this daily sample close to where yesterday's post begins: a captivating soundtrack work for a Canadian film (Peter Mettler, Director) by this famed axe-man with strong, long-held ties to Monsieur R. Lussier, below. This folk-ambient dreamscape features contributions by Jane Siberry, Ann Bourne and J. Derome, for those who like their Canadiana.

WANG CHUN6 - T0 L1VE AND DIE 1N LA (1985)

First of three 1985 releases: a personal project today. An aural testament of the dreams of youth and influence. And the glaring dream of Los Angeles at sunrise, the sound it makes through cinema speakers.

TERRY R1LEY - H4PPY ENDING (1972)

Snowing here. Sleepwalking while working: no time for movies, youtube, procrastination. Instead, Riley's film work. Here, two pieces from Santoni's Les Yeux Fermes. "Journey From a Death of a Friend" sounds like a calmer reworking of some Curved Air and Dervishes keyboard motifs; "Happy Ending" is one of few of Riley's saxophone recordings that, in under 20 minutes, is a multifaceted journey of dreams in itself.

TERRY R1LEY - LE SECRET DE LA V1E (1975)

From Whitelaw's film, also know as Lifespan. Features "G Song", one of Riley's more covered works, as well as five shortish incidental works that present hints of raga, carnival music, Jean-Michel Jarre-ish sweeps, and, as always, enough evolving loops to drive you slowly, beautifully and maddeningly towards a climax that may never come.

BI0SPHERE - INSOMN1A (1997)

Here is Biosphere's (Geir Jennssen) stark, beautiful score for Skjoldbjaerg's film. The sense of paranoia and claustrophobia that imbues the cinematic tone is suitably reflected and refracted in the "midnight sun" glare of the soundtrack. An example of REM deficiency.
